Day 1- October 8th
The Yes Club Thanksgiving Weekend started in the morning of October 8th where the group loaded up in the bus and made their way to the Phoenix Magnet Academy (PMA) dorms in Squamish. Once the group arrived at the dorms, the kids took time to get settled in their rooms and acquaint themselves with their new surroundings. As a group, the leaders and participants made a social contract, which is a set of rules that everyone agrees to follow. The most notable rule from the social contract was to be respectful to the older students and instructors that live in the dorm, and ensure the YES Club participants be respectful guests.

After getting orientated, the YES Club group participated in several team-bonding activities including “Catch The Tail”, “Heard The Sheep” and “Nuclear Waste Removal”! After all that activity, the participants worked up an appetite and headed off to the dining hall. In the evening before bed, the group came together in the common area of the dorm and did a debrief of the day. In this debrief, the participants were asked about their experience of the day and were asked to rate their effort on a scale of 1-10. The average score was 7/10 as there was room for improvement regarding communication. A plan was created in order to improve communication skills the next day.

Day 2- October 9th
For the second day of the camp, the group set out in the forest about one kilometer away from the dorms to learn about emergency shelter building and fire making skills. Once in the forest, the group received a lesson on knot tying. In this lesson, four knots were taught that are particularly important when building a shelter. The group then learned how to set up and build a shelter with a tarp in the trees. After successfully making their shelter, the participants then learned how to build a fire. The reward for their hard work was roasting marshmallows over the fire that the participants created!

Day 3- October 10th
On the third day of the camp, the group took the Sea to Sky Gondola up 900 meters to see the spectacular views of Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains. The participants learned about how to use a compass, how a compass can be used in navigation and how to use a compass while using a map. As a reward for all their hard work, the participants were treated to some hot chocolate while taking in the breathtaking views.

Overall this was a wonderful trip! All the participants spent most of their time laughing and making great friendships with each other. They also learned a great deal about the natural world and practical survival skills. We hope to see the group out on future YES Club Trips.
